SENSE SCOTLAND: David Frame

  

Uno de los participantes más peculiares de los que pasan por Sense es David Frame.

Viene todas las semanas para tener un one-to-one con Gayle, cada semana con un color en mente. Parte de su trabajo artístico consiste en recolectar cosas del color que toca. Esto lo hace durante toda la semana, en casa, y también en Sense donde se pasea por los talleres buscando objetos. Gayle a veces le muestra cosas y el decide, expresivamente, si le gustan o no. Tiene caracter, determinación, y no le vale todo. Además prefiere siempre seguir sus propias ideas, así que lo que una semana no le gusta porque se lo sugiere otro, le puede encantar a la semana siguiente cuando ya es idea suya. La toma de decisiones es un momento muy importante y lleva su tiempo: mirar por las estanterias, revolver cajas y cajones, dudar, emocionarse cuando encuentra algo genial. Una vez tiene suficientes cosas, bajan a la fotocopiadora de la entrada, donde transcurre el resto de la sesión.

One of the most intriguing participants coming to TouchBase is David Frame.

Every Wednesday he has a one-to-one with Gayle, and always comes with a colour in mind. Part of his artwork is to gather things with this color. He makes this collection during the week at home, and also in Sense, where he wanders around workshops looking for objects. Sometimes Gayle shows him things and he decides, expressively, if he likes or does not like. He is demanding with the search. As well as this, he has a strong personality and prefers to follow his own ideas. So, if one day there is something he does not like because it is suggested by someone else, the following week he can be delighted with it, because, then, it was his idea. Decision making is a very important moment and it takes time: looking through the shelves, inside boxes and drawers, then doubting, and the excitement when something interesting is found. Once he has enough things, they go to the photocopier by the entrance where they spend the rest of the session.

 

El trabajo de David es complejo de explicar porque no se limita a lo que produce en Sense, es todo un sistema que le permite, no solo entender su entorno, si no también apropiarselo, gestionarlo y controlarlo. 

David's work is elaborate to explain because it does not only involve what he makes at Sense. It is an entire system that allows him not only to understand his environment, but also making it his own, to manage it and to control it.

Primero, con los objetos recolectados, crea composiciones sobre la superficie de la fotocopiadora. Y entonces comienza a escanearlas, una y otra vez, variando un poco de posición los objetos, hasta que consigue lo que busca. De cada composición se hacen dos copias en papel fotográfico de gramaje medio. Una copia es para los archivos de Sense y la otra para él.

First, he builds compositions with the collected objects onto the photocopier surface. Then, he begins to scan them, again and again, with some variations, until getting what he wants. Two copies of each composition are made in medium weight photo paper. One copy is for the Sense files and the other for him.

 

Los que le observamos no tenemos muy claro lo que busca, si es una determinada posición, o simetría, semejanza entre los objetos... No se sabe que es, hasta que, satisfecho con el resultado, retira todo lo que estaba en la fotocopiadora y comienza a colocar otras cosas. O hace un gesto que indica que ésa es de las buenas, e irá para el bolsillo.

Those who see him do not always get what he exactly wants, if it´s a certain position, a symmetry, or a similarity between objects. No one knows it until he, satisfied with the result, removes everything from the photocopier, and begins to place more things on it. Sometimes, when it's a very good one, he does a sign indicating that this one will go into his pocket.

 

Como digo, el trabajo continua en casa, donde recorta las fotocopias separando de nuevo cada cosa, como si liberara los objetos para poder seguir teniendo control sobre ellos. Porque, siendo pequeños él puede guardarlos en sus bolsillos, y así evitar que quienes limpian su casa los tiren a la basura (David es acumulador y recolector, su casa debe de estar repleta). Los llevará en los bolsillos hasta que decida que ya es suficiente, y los tire él mismo.

As I said before, his work continues at home where he cuts the photocopies, dividing everything again, as if the release of the objects would give him the control over them. Because, being small, he can keep them in his pockets, to make sure cleaning staff don´t throw them away. (David's an accumulator and collector, so his home must be full). He carries them in his pockets, until he decides that enough is enough, and then he throws them away.

En casa David dedica tiempo a coser. Hace cojines que rellena con las fotocopias  recortadas. Y cierra los cojines cosiéndolos con satisfacción, porque sabe que, sobre lo que está ahí dentro, el sigue teniendo el control, nadie lo va a tirar.

At home David spends time sewing. He makes cushions filled with the cut photocopies. Then he closes the cushions with satisfaction, because he knows he has control of what it´s inside it, and then no one is going to throw it away.

Su  cuidador nos contaba que en casa también escanea cosas, y escribe palabras sobre ellas. Como por ejemplo, escanea una taza y sobre la imagen escribe mum mum mum mum, porque ese sábado irá con su madre a tomar el té; o escanea un paquete de salchichas y escribe tuesday tuesday tuesday tuesday, porque ese día hay una barbacoa.

His carer told us that, at home, he also scans things, and writes words on them. For example he scans a mug and onto the image he types “mam mam mam mam”, because that Saturday he will go to have a cup of tea with his mam; or he scans a package of sausages and writes “tuesday tuesday tuesday tuesday”, because there is a barbecue that day.

Gayle me decía un día que David hace fotos también. Técnicamente no son muy buenas porque a veces le falta agilidad en las manos y no puede manejar muy bien la cámara. Pero son geniales para ver el mundo a través de sus ojos. Fotografía un primer plano de una caja repleta de galletas alineadas casi como una formación militar, o una bolsa de patatas fritas por dentro y los destellos plateados del papel le dan una apariencia psicodélica.

Gayle told me that David takes photos too. Technically they are not very good, because of the lack of flexibility in his hands that means he doesn´t handle the camera very well. But they are a great way to see the world through his eyes. He takes a close up of a cookie box, and it looks like a military formation. Or a bag of crisps almost from its inside, and the silver paper sparkles gives it a psychedelic appearance.
