MADRID: DEBAJO DEL SOMBRERO, an approach

+

In May, I was in Madrid for two weeks visiting one of my supportive organizations: DEBAJO DEL SOMBRERO (Under the Hat). In fact, I was with them when I started writing this blog in 2011, as part of an exchange with a centre in Finland. During these two weeks I followed their varied activities and I caught up with all their news/developments.

DEBAJO DEL SOMBRERO describes itself as a "platform for creation, research, production, and dissemination of art where the main characters are people with developmental difficulties". They  highlight the fact that their workshops "are developed in venues that enable learning and communication with other artists." I would also add that they have the ability to fit the workshops into the cultural fabric of the city, making the project visible in a natural way. Today  they are still easily recognized as working beyond the habitual cultural environment.
They organized so that each day of the week the workshop takes place in a different venue. In the next posts I tell you where they meet.

The seed that led to the founding of this organization lies in the documentary ¨"What´s under your hat?"  and everything around its creation. It is about the creative process and the life of the outsider artist Judith Scott. Judith developed her work in the Creative Growth Centre. This centre served as the initial model for DEBAJO DEL SOMBRERO and the director of the documentary, Lola Barrera, became the director of  DEBAJO DEL SOMBRERO.

The movie is in English with Spanish subtitles, so it is easy to understand for many people. Well worth watching !!!

I started working with them in 2010, first attending their weekly workshops as a volunteer. Then I assisted one of their artists, Belen Sanchez, in the Extreme Dance Project: an outrageous, crazy  short film. My tasks included helping Belen in the development of characters and the story itself, like a sort of translator of what her head cooked up. To help Belen during her artistic process was an incredibly powerful and rewarding experience, that left us both with very fond memories.

Sentí mucho no poder quedarme.

DEBAJO DEL SOMBRERO also promotes and supports "the development of individual and collective projects" and is very involved in European networks which connect outsider art centres. The week after my visit it took place the first "Expanding realities" meeting, a collaborative project  with Art in Motion (Bristol), GASP studio artists (Cork) and the University of Cork, project coordinator entity. This first meeting consisted on sharing workshop and activities for a week.. They were greeted with an installation of white objects, like a canvas ready to be filled up by visitor artists. I collected  some photos of this event from the website. Below are some of the installation prep which I witnessed. I was so sorry that I could not stay for the whole week.
