Con motivo de los Juegos de la Commonwealth Glasgow 2014, la organización hizo un encargo especial al departamento de Arte de Sense Scotland. Se les pidió que crearan el número 12 como parte de la cuenta atrás, del 14 al 1, que iniciaría los Juegos.
The Art department of Sense Scotland were approached by the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games with a special commission. They were asked to create
number 12 as part of the countdown, from 14 to 1, which launched the Games.
Los tutores a
cargo del Proyecto fueron Imelda Neale, James Gow , y David McDiarmid. La
propuesta era crear una escultura móvil. “Dimos con la esencia del proyecto
concibiéndolo como un trabajo de grupo. Una escultura que hace a la gente
trabajar junta, algo que no es estático, algo que te hace involucrarte”. El
resultado son dos piezas independientes, pero complementarias, y móviles,
concebidas como vehículos. El 2 se apoya sobre un triciclo con capacidad para
dos personas. El 1 es una caja con ruedas que se puede ir empujando, pero que
necesita ser dirigida porque no tiene visibilidad frontal, así que requiere
confianza plena en el otro. Conceptos estos, el de confianza y espacio
compartido, que encajan con la filosofía de Sense.
Tutors in charge of
this project were Imelda Neale, James Gow, and David MacDiarmid. The proposal
was to create a mobile sculpture. “We got down the whole essence of it, trying
to get it as a team project. A sculpture that gets people to work together,
something that´s not just static, something that gets you involved”. The result
is two separate, but complementary, sculptures, both of them designed as
vehicles. The number 2 stands on a tricycle, which has room for two people. So
it is a sharing space. The number 1 is a box standing on wheels, so it can be
pushed, although it doesn´t have visibility, and then the driver needs to be
guide by someone else. So it requires full trust in the other. These concepts,
trust and shared space, fit perfectly with Sense philosophy.

Asistimos al
ensayo general de la ceremonia de apertura. Me impresionó el estadio de los
Celtic por el inmenso aforo y lo grande que es, además de que no conozco muchos
estadios por aquello de no ser muy aficionada al futbol. No sé cuántos niveles
tiene, pero la sensación que tuve al subir es de ¡esto no se acaba nunca!
The team were invited
to the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony, and I went with them. I was
very impressed by the Celtic Park and its huge capacity. I don´t know how
many floors it has, but my feeling when climbing was: this never ends! Maybe
this is just because I have not seen many stadiums.
La luz,
maravillosa, presagiaba una tregua de dos semanitas de clima soleado. Y ha
durado. No las dos semanas completas, porque los tres últimos días han sido una
auténtica ducha. Pero en general han sido quince días con la ciudad a tope de
gente y eventos por todas partes. Los Juegos se clausuran hoy, y esta mañana ha
tenido lugar una carrera ciclista, pasada por agua, que recorría todo el
centro.
A bright sunset presaged a nice break from rainy weather, and it has lasted, at least until the last three days which rained like a shower. Overall, these fifteen days have been plenty of people and events all over the city, which was really buzzing. The Games closed on Sunday the 3th with a cycle race through the Merchant city on the morning, of course it was pouring down.
Vuelvo al ensayo general, del que me gustaría
destacar algunos momentos especialmente graciosos, como los minutos de gloria
de los voluntarios, que ocupaban el lugar de los equipos durante su
presentación. O la falsa reina saludando desde el coche, y la animadora que
ocupó el tiempo de Rod Steward, saltando como una loca con dos coletas.
También hubo un momento un poco extraño: al entonar
el “God Save The Queen” más del 50% del aforo se puso en pie. Y es que la
independencia y el referéndum son parte del escenario en el que se desarrollan
estos Juegos.
Disfruté mucho del espacio, del cambio de escala y
de la sensación de multitud. Y por supuesto de la cuenta atrás.
Let’s get back to the dress rehearsal, which I
would like to highlight some particularly funny moments. One of the best was
the 15 minutes of fame of volunteers, being watched on the big screens
meanwhile doing the teams parade. Another, it was the false queen waving from
the car.
There was also a wee odd moment, when
singing “God Save The Queen”, because around the 50% of the stadium stood. Do
not forget that a referendum for independence will take place on September. So
this is The Referendum Summer, and it is part of the background in which these
games are developed.
I enjoyed a lot the space, the change of scale,
and sense of being part of the crowd. Of course, we also enjoyed the countdown.
