the summit: It is Now!!!

La Cumbre Internacional para Artistas con Discapacidad y sus Estudios de Apoyo tuvo lugar en el Project Ability del 4 al 6 de Marzo. Fueron tres intensos y provechosos días en los que todo el centro se transformó para acoger a diez estudios visitantes, compartir experiencias, metodologías y mostrar el trabajo de sus artistas. Los resultados de la Research Room en la que Jonathan y yo colaboramos, se expusieron, representando al PA, un orgullo. En el proximo post los publicaré.

The International Summit for Learning Disability Artists and their Support Studios took place in Project Ability from March 4th to 6th. Three busy and rewarding days, full of creative activity and curiosity, that turned the workshop space upside down, in the best possible way. Eleven art centres from around the world gathered together to share experiences, methodologies and art work. The work that Jonathan and I made during the Research Room represented Project Ability in the exhibition.

Se generaron diversas actividades, lo que contribuyó a crear un ambiente muy relajado y abierto. En uno de los talleres se improvisó un auditorio cubrindo las ventanas con unas coloridas cortinas. El resultado fue un espacio muy fotogénico donde cada estudio hizo sus presentaciones. Los artistas invitados tambien tenían la opción de unirse a los tutores en el taller contiguo, o hacer alguna de las visitas programadas alrededor de la ciudad.

A lot of activities were going on, which helped to create a very relaxed atmosphere. One of the workshops was turned into an auditorium. Covering windows with colourful curtains resulted in a very effective and photogenic room where each estudio made a presentation. Artists could also meet art tutors in the adjacent workshop spaces or go for one of the scheduled visits around the city.

Momento de la presentacion de Kaarisilta, situado en Lahti al norte de Finlandia. Aprovecharon el Summit para invitar a todos los presentes  a la bienal que celebraran este verano. Dejaron bien claro que no siempre esta cubierto de nieve, como en la foto, y animaron a todos a conocer el sol de media noche.

The  group from Kaarisilta (Finland) making their presentation. Their studio is located in northern Finland, Lahti. They took the opportunity to invite everyone to the Biennial they will celebrate this summer. They made it clear that it is not always covered with snow, like in the photo, and they also encouraged everyone to experience the midnight sun.
                                                          

La sala de exposiciones se compartimentó para que cada estudio tuviera su espacio expositivo independiente, también se uso el hall principal del edificio de Trongate 103.

 

The exhibition room and the main entrance of Trongate 103 were partitioned to offer an independent exhibition space for every studio.

Atelier 5 (Germany) dejó a todos impresionados con la cantidad y calidad de los trabajos expuestos, llenaron su espacio con un ejercito de gnomos y construciones. Mi preferido, el libro de las señales.

Atelier 5 (Germany) left everyone impressed with the quality and also the amount of work exhibited as they filled their space with an army of gnomes and constructions. My favorite: the book of traffic signals.
 

Otro de los artistas de la exposición, Leslie Thompson de Ventura Arts en Manchester. Durante las presentaciones hubo una  reivindicación del bordado también como expresion masculina por parte de uno de los artistas de Inuti. Todos aplaudimos. Curiosamente los dos artistas que mostraron bordados en la exposicion eran hombres. 

Some embroideries by Leslie Thompson from Ventura Arts in Manchester at the exhibition. During the presentations another artist, who also uses embroidery, claimed this technique as an " expression of masculinity ". Needless to say, we all applauded ! Interestingly, both artists exhibiting embroidery were men.

Una de los aciertos de este summit es que el espacio permitó libertad de movimiento a todos los artistas invitados. Muchos de ellos eligieron trabajar, utilizar la inspiracion del viaje y el cambio de lugar habitual, probar otras formas de hacer. El ambiente del taller fue vibrante y muy internacional.

One of the successes of this summit was that the big space allowed free movement to all invited artists. Some of them decided to make work while attending, using the travel and change from their home space as inspiration. The workshop atmosphere was vibrant and very cosmopolitan indeed.

El grupo australiano, del centro ArtsProject, trajo souvenirs (pequeños boligrafos-canguro y llavero-boomeran) que fueron repartiendo entre todos, fue un exito. El último dia todo el grupo se hizo una foto luciendo la boina escocesa con mechón pelirrojo incluido. Era un grupo muy divertido.

The group from ArtsProject (Australia) brought some souveniers with them: kangaroo pens and boomerang key chains to share out among participants. Everybody enjoyed the idea and the wee toys. On the last day, the whole australian group took a photo wearing scottish 'tammys' ( hats ) with fake ginger hair. They were a very funny bunch.

Otro momento del taller: La artista Tanya Raabe-Webber retratando a Jan Platun, que hizo una presentacion muy brillante sobre el trabajo de los voluntarios y su contribucion al projecto del Project Ability. Y de remate, Celine retratandolas a ellas.

Another moment at the workshop, with Tanya Raabe-Webber portraying Jan Platun, who made a brilliant presentation about volunteers work and their contribution to the Project Ability experience. And, to complete the scene, Celine taking a portrait of both of them.

La artista Cathy Staughton del Art Projec de Australia, realizó durante el Summit este dibujo enorme con tres robots. Ella esta muy interesada en la tecnología, entre otras cosas porque le facilita la comunicación con el entorno. Me contaba una de las tutoras con las que viajaba que es una asidua de   las redes sociales y que a menudo las utiliza para conversar, aún estando físicamente junto a esa persona.

The artist Cathy Staughton from the Australian Art Project, making a huge canvas with three robots during the summit. She is very interested in technology for many reasons, particularly when it makes easier communication with the external world (she is deaf). She is a  habitual user of social media, and often uses it to talk with people in the same room.

La presentación de Inuti,Suecia, fue emocionante. Tres de sus artistas fueron explicando su trabajo y proceso creativo de forma muy personal. También nos enseñaron  un entrenamiento básico para artistas, con algunos ejercicios que desarrollan la vista o los músculos de manos y brazos.

The Inuti presentation (from  Sweden) was emotional. Three of their artists described their creative working process in a very personal way. They also showed us a basic excercises for artists, intended to help develop and strech muscles in the hands and around the eyes.

La artistaTanya  Raabe-Webber documento el summit con sus retratos. Ha estado todo el mes en Project Ability llevando a cabo una residencia becada por el Arts Council England. Su visión la reunió en un tríptico de grandes dimensiones, que será expuesto a principios del año que viene, y en multitud de bocetos.

Tanya  Raabe-Webber is an artist who was on a months´ residency at Project Ability (granted by the English Arts Council). She is a great portrait painter and decided to creat a visual record of the summit. She made many sketches and gathered some of them together in a huge tryptic, that will be exhibited next year.

RESEARCH ROOM: Jonathan McKinstry-Consuelo Rosa Serván

Comenzamos las sesiones en Noviembre y nos adaptamos muy fácilmente al ritmo de trabajo, dos días a la semana en sesiones de 5 horas. Tenemos sólo un mes y medio así que aprovechamos el tiempo al máximo.

Jonathan comienza usando uno de sus propios personajes, el zorro, y recrea un laboratorio tropical en el espacio oscuro del taller. 

We started in November and we adapted easily to the work rhythm, two days per week on 5 hour sessions. We have only a month and a half, so we are determined to  make good use of  the time .

Jonathan begins using one of his own characters, the fox, and he recreates a tropical laboratory in the dark space of the workshop.

Estas son algunas de sus tiras cómicas sobre los zorros, que dedican sus noches a conducir tanques o batallar contra el dragón y tienen a todo el vecindario asustado con sus ruidos.

These are some of his comic about foxes,which are famous for spending their nights  driving tanks or battling against the dragon, and also scaring with their noises to the whole neighborhood.

Otro de sus cartoons favoritos, ya lo comenté en la anterior entrega, es la serie The Trap Door. Aquí se pueden ver varios momentos del proceso y el resultado final. Como veis utiliza técnicas secas, lapices y rotuladores de colores. Mi idea, al comenzar el proyecto, era trabajar solo en blanco y negro, pero para Jonathan trabajar en color es algo natural. Parte de lo importante de trabajar en equipo es la adaptación, el acoplarse de las dos partes. Así que hemos establecido que haremos mitad del día en color y mitad en blanco y negro. Además pronto me rindo ante la evidencia de que el color se integra perfectamente con la serigrafía, y son muy buenas. 

As I mentioned in the previous post, another of his favorite cartoons is The Trap Door. On the photos below, you can see several stages on the process of Jonathan´s interpretation of this cartoon, and the  result. He mostly uses dry techniques: colour pencils and felt-tipped pens. At the begining of the project, I started with the idea of working only in black and white, but for Jonathan working with colour is something natural. An important side of  working as a team is adaptation, so we've established that we work half day in color and half in black and white. Besides, I soon face the fact that colour blends perfectly with screen printing, and are very good work.

Este es nuestro pequeño estudio. Está entre los dos talleres más concurridos de Project Ability, pero bastante aislado. Aquí nos concentramos sin problemas, pero si necesitamos material o ver más caras lo tenemos fácil, un lujo. Para Jonathan es como una oficina. Para mi como el estudio que echo de menos desde que llegué aquí.

This is our little studio. It is located between the two busiest workshops, but at the same time quite isolated. Here we can focus with no distractions. But if we need any  material, we can easily get it, what a luxury! For Jonathan it is like an office. For me it is like the study that I miss since I came here.

Esta es la pared de los trabajos en proceso. Es también la pared del ventanuco, desde el que se ve el trajín de participantes de Aspire trabajando.

This is the wall where we hang up work in progress. It is also the wall of the small window, from which we can see the bustle of Aspire participants while working.

También desde la ventana nos llega algo de vida exterior, hemos tenido un par de días especialmente escoceses, de esos que concentran las cuatro estaciones en pocas horas. En esta foto contemplamos  la calma después de la GRAN tormenta.

From the window we also get something from outer life. We had a couple of very scottish days, one of these that concentrate all four seasons in one day. In the photo  below, we are enjoying calm after a BIG storm.

Para algunos los fondos estoy utilizando batik porque puedo controlar mejor las zonas donde quiero color, y porque además me gusta mucho el apresto que da la cera a la loneta. Jonathan nunca a usado batik y tiene curiosidad por aprender como hacerlo. Le enseño las cuatro cosas básicas y rápidamente se pone a ello. Me resulta muy curioso que su forma de abordarlo es completamente diferente a la mía. Es increíble ver como somos de diferentes.

I am using batik for some backgrounds because I can better control the areas where I want color, and also because I really like the way that wax gives a sizing to the canvas. Jonathan never used batik before, so he is curious about learning the technique. I teach him the four basic things and he quickly starts experimenting. I  surprise that his way to address it is completely different to mine. It is amazing how different we are.

 Dos ejemplos diferentes de como usamos el batik. En el de la izquierda, "Tornado", creando formas, y en el de la derecha, "El Bosque", mas uniforme e integrador.

GLASGOW, PROJECT ABILITY: The Research Room

Comienzo un proyecto de colaboracion con uno de los artistas de Project Ability: The Research Room, con Jonathan McKinstry. 

 Durante un mes y medio trabajaremos mano a mano, mezclando sus ideas y forma de trabajar con las mias. Es una gran oportunidad en la que contamos con un espacio y un tiempo concreto para desarrollar una colaboración artística. Aún así, el primer día hay nervios...no sabemos que saldrá de esta combinación (escribo estas entradas a toro pasado, así que ya sé que lo que salió de esa mezcla fue un buen trabajo y una experiencia increible) 

Vuelta a Trongate 103!! 

I started a collaboration project with one of Project Ability artists: The Research Room with Jonathan McKinstry.

  For a month and a half, we will work hand in hand, mixing our ideas and ways of working. It's a great opportunity to have a space and a specific time to develop an artistic collaboration. Still, the first day there are some nerves ... I guess we do not know what will come out of this combination (I write these entries in retrospect, so I know what came out of this blend was a good job and an incredible experience)

 Back on Trongate 103 !!

Jonathan McKinstry es sobre todo un gran dibujante y un apasionado del cómic. Un ejemplo de uno de sus cómics es esta tira sobre la ajetreada vida nocturna de los zorros urbanos (Glasgow está lleno). Dibuja sin esfuerzo y con mucha agilidad. 

Antes de esta colaboración coincidimos algún viernes en  las sesiones de Aspire, y entonces me sorprendió también su agilidad pintando. 

En el tiempo que llevamos trabajado juntos he descubierto que también le encanta el color, no tiene miedo a probar nuevas técnicas y es muy bueno poniendo títulos.

Jonathan McKinstry is above all a cartoonist, at least this is what I thought before starting working together at the Research Room. He is passionate about comics. A sample of his work is this comic strip, about the busy nightlife that foxes have in Glasgow. He draws effortlessly with great agility. 

Time before, at Aspire workshop, it also surprised me his painting skills. 

Now, I've also found that he loves the color, is not afraid of trying new techniques, and is very good at finding titles.

Como punto de partida vamos a usar un nuevo proyecto sobre la luz, más bien sobre la ausencia de ella, que comencé cuando llegué a Escocia. Una de las fotos que estoy tomando para este proyecto resulta ser un buen comienzo para la Research Room. Así que, previo al trabajo en común, he realizado tres tiradas de serigrafía sobre tela y sobre papel, que serán nuestra base de trabajo. En la imagen elegida se entrevé el taller de Project Ability, completamente a oscuras, sólo iluminado por una luz que entra por las ventanas desde la calle. 

La idea es llenar esa oscuridad de fantasmas y personajes del imaginario de Jonathan, transformar ese espacio con sus dibujos. 

As a starting point, we will use a new project on the light, rather the lack of it, that I started when I came to Scotland. One of the photos I took on dark, turns out to be a good start for the Research Room. So previous to working together, I made three print runs of screen printing on canvas and paper which will be the base for our work. At the chosen image the PA workshop is glimpsed completely dark, only illuminated by a light coming through the windows.

The idea is to fill the darkness of ghosts and characters from Jonathan´s imagination, transforming the space with his drawings.

Una vez comienzan las sesiones los dos tenemos claro que necesitamos referencias. Asi que, poco a poco, y charlando mucho sobre comics, peliculas, dibujantes y artistas favoritos, vamos levantando nuestra "inspiration wall".

Once we start with sessions, both of us are clear about needing references. So little by little, and after talking a lot about comics, movies, artists and favorite things, we build up  our "inspiration wall".
