SENSE SCOTLAND: Art Department

El departamento de Arte de Sense Scotland engloba Musica/Teatro/Artes Plasticas, que están diseminados por el edificio. Artes Plásticas se encuentra en la primera planta y consta de cuatro talleres, un almacén y dos oficinas.
En la planta baja hay una habitación multiusos, en la que se desarrollan los eventos más concurridos. También cuenta con un taller de madera al otro lado del edificio

The Art department of Sense Scotland includes Music/ Drama/ Fine Arts, which are located in different parts of the building. Fine Arts is on the first floor, and it has four workshops, a store and two offices.
On the ground floor, there is a multipurpose room, where busiest events take place. Besides, there is a wood workshop at the other side of the building.

Y esta es parte de la declaración de intenciones que se puede leer en la web de Sense y da una idea de cuales son sus objetivos y prioridades:
"Reconocemos el valor de las artes en la creación de oportunidades para explorar los sentimientos, opciones e intereses de cada individuo... Creemos que las artes son una herramienta eficaz en el desarrollo y la construcción de habilidades interpersonales, de la autoconfianza y la conciencia de sí mismo. Y además brinda la oportunidad de salirse de la rutina, dentro de un ambiente seguro".

The Sense Scotland´s Art department is very lively, and always open to aesthetic experiments.
 Here is an extract of the statement, that you can read in Sense website and it gives you an idea about  its goals and priorities :
"We recognise the value of the arts in creating opportunities to explore an individual's wants, feelings, choices and interests...We have found that the arts have proven effective in developing and building interpersonal skills, self-confidence and self-awareness and provide the opportunity to venture from routine in a safe environment".

 

Se proponen dos tipos de encuentros: en grupo, y el one to one. Los grupos no son muy numerosos, hasta 10 personas más o menos, y hay un tutor por cada grupo con una propuesta diferente. Es importante hacer referencia a esta organización porque el tema, los materiales o el enfoque de las propuestas, lleva impreso el carácter de cada tutor.

Two sorts of workshops are offered: group, and one to one. Groups are not very large, up to ten people or so. There is an art tutor for each group, with a different proposal. It is important to refer this way of organize, because themes, materials and approaches are very different depending on the tutor. So, every  workshop have the imprint of the artist who run it.

Una cosa que destacaría es que se prioriza el uso de materiales naturales y el reciclaje. Y sobretodo el experimentar, con materiales y con técnicas. Los talleres están siempre llenos de cositas, que por supuesto llaman mi atención, cristalitos, papelitos, palitos... cositas interesantes.

I would like to highlight that it is always prioritized the use of natural materials and recycling. Above all, it is promoted experiment with different kind of materials and techniques. Workshops are always full of small things, like wee papers, sticks, glasses, that catch my attention.

Otra cosa importante es que Sense Scotland tiene estrictas políticas de control sobre las imágenes de las personas que participan en sus actividades,  para evitar el mal uso de las mismas. Esto no me permite publicar fotos, ni tan siquiera utilizar mi propia cámara. Para tomar fotos, me ceden el uso de un iPad, y las imágenes quedan publicadas en una nube, solo accesible en el entorno de Sense. Así que las fotos que llegan al blog están muy cortadas y son bastante abstractas, pero la calidad de lente del ipad compensa esto y salen cosas interesantes. Así que lo estoy disfrutando!

Another important thing,Sense Scotland has strict  policy of control over the images of people involved in their activities, to prevent misuse of the same. This does not allow me to post photos, or even use my own camera. They assign me an I pad to take pictures, and images are posted on a cloud with restricted access. The pictures that come to the blog are very cutted and a bit abstract, because I have to crop them. But the quality of ipad lens compensates that, and it brings out interesting things. So I'm enjoying it!

GLASGOW: Sense Scotland

Son casi dos años de la última entrada. Y sigo en Glasgow.  Aquí es donde se desarrollará mi tercera visita. En realidad la visita comenzó en el mes de abril, pero otros menesteres, como la búsqueda de piso y el trabajo, me han tenido apartada. Mi  destino: Sense Scotland.

Almost two years since the last post in this blog, and I am still in Glasgow. Here is where it is going to take place my third visit. Actually the visit started on April, but other important duties, like seeking for flat and work, kept me busy. My destiny: Sense Scotland.

 

Desde mi nuevo flat en St Georgie´s Cross, el camino hacia Kinning Park te muestra la transformación de lo que en otro tiempo fue la zona industrial de Glasgow. Y aún se conservan algunas estructuras, devenidas en símbolos de la ciudad como la grúa del puerto (he oído que hay un proyecto para convertirla en pub). A las que se le suman los

nuevos emblemas del desarrollo urbanístico, levantados a ambos lados de la ribera del Clive. Algunos de estos se ven bien en las fotos: el SSE Hydro, que parece un estadio de futbol pero que es un espacio para grandes eventos de los Juegos de la Commonwealth, el Clyde Auditorium, con forma de armadillo, y el puente llamado Arco del Clyde que por la noche se ilumina (foto: http://www.clydewaterfront.com/our-journey/image-galleries/building-of-the-clyde-arc).

On my way from my new flat, in St Georgie´s Cross, to Kinning Park I can see the deep change on what, years ago, it was an industrial area. Some structures  still stand up, like for example the Finniestone Crane, which now became a city symbol (someone told me that there is a project to open a pub on the top of the crane, can that be true?). To these old structures, you have to add some of the new urban development emblems like the SSE Hydro (it set to be a major venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games), the Clyde Auditorium (familiarly known as "The Armadillo") and the Clyde Arc.

Cruzado el puente, camino por un barrio más residencial de casas adosadas, con más vegetación y  enanos de jardín, que desemboca en Paisley Road West. 

Once the bridge is crossed, I walk through a neighbourhood full of small houses and garden gnomes, which leads in Paisley Road West.

 

Atajo cruzando entre otra hilera de adosados, para por fin llegar al TouchBase, que es como llaman a la central de Sense Scotland en Glasgow. Y al llegar al TouchBase las nubes desaparecen y el cielo luce azul brillante, y es que esto es Escocia donde puedes disfrutar de las cuatro estaciones en pocas horas.

I cut across between another row of houses, to finally reach TouchBase, which is how the main building of Sense Scotland Glasgow is called. When I get there, clouds disappear and the sky shines blue, because this is Scotland, where you can enjoy four seasons in few hours.

Sense Scotland es un centro de integración social para personas con discapacidad,  que tiene mucha repercusión en Escocia. Comenzó constituyéndose como charity en el 85, ofreciendo servicios a personas sordociegas, y  creció rápidamente. Actualmente ofrecen apoyo a miles de discapacitados, y sus familias, desde sus sedes en diferentes ciudades escocesas.

TouchBase es el centro que aglutina la vida en Sense. En él se encuentran las oficinas, los talleres, aulas y una cafetería. Todas las mañanas acuden participantes desde diferentes puntos de Glasgow. Un cuidador es asignado cada mañana a cada discapacitado, y juntos pasan el día. Hacen visitas en grupos (piscina, museos, parque) acuden a los talleres, toman el lunch, ven la tele etc. Todo acaba siendo bastante familiar porque unos y otros se conocen después de años trabajando juntos.

Sense Scotland is a center of social integration for people with disabilities, which has a major impact in Scotland. It is formalized as a charity in 1985, to offer services to deafblind people. Currently, Sense offers support to thousands of disabled people, and their families, from its headquarters in different Scottish cities.

TouchBase is the center that brings life to Sense. It contains between others: offices, workshops, classrooms and a cafe.  Every morning participants come here from different points of Glasgow, and a carer is assigned to each one. They spend the day together. Everything ends up being quite familiar because, after years of working together, they know each other very well.
